Presented at the Annual Convention - Institute of Indian Foundrymen, at Baroda. |
SYNOPSIS: Based on the use of Ceramic Extruded Filters and Ceramic Foam Filters on a large scale for the manufacture of Automotive Cylinder Block castings and Spheroidal Graphite Iron Castings, the paper establishes technical advantages of improved mechanical and longer component life. It is established that the 'cost' of filters used is offset by the reduction in the rate of rejection alone. All other improvement in mechanical properties is a bonus. The publication is based on true findings from the first 'Large Scale' use of such filters, in India, at the Automotive Foundry of M/s. Premier Automobiles Ltd., India, under the guidance of the author. M/s.Premier Automobiles Ltd. produces FIAT Cars in India. |

| This paper is an attempt to draw attention of
manufacturers and users of components made from Spheroidal Graphite Iron, to the newly
memrging scenario demanding more than laid down specifications of S. G Iron, in various
standards. The need for energy conservation in moving transport vehicles has put further pressure on the designer to reduce the weight of components. The designer is thus called upon to design the components critically and optimally with a much lower safety factor. At the saem time, customer satisfaction cannot be ignored. Also, the product reliability has to be taken into account. The scenario, therefore, calls for the production of high quality totally reliable S. G. Iron components, at the lowest cost. How can this be achieved ? What should a foundryman pay attention to, while producing high integrity S. G. Iron components ? This paper attempts to suggest some areas needing extreme attention and care. The need to evaluate the component by NDT methods is also briefly highlighted in the paper.
